3 Ravens Makes the Beer Of The Month Club

This month we selected 3 Ravens for the May Beer Of The Month Club and met with Nathan (aka one of the 3 Ravens micro brewery owners) down at the 3 Ravens brewery in Thornbury, Victoria.

But when I arrived at the brewery the doors were locked. So I called Nathan to see what was happening and after he apologised for being late and squarely blaming the Good Beer Week for his tardiness promised to meet me in about half an hour. And when Nathan and a couple of beer associates arrived to open up the brewery I asked what seemed like a logical question, “are you guys the 3 Ravens?” and one of them said, “we were last night, that’s for sure!” referring to a corporate engagement the brewery had at one of the Good Beer Week events the night before. But alas the other two gentlemen were from the Mash Brewery in W.A which will feature in coming months.

The 3 Ravens brewery doesn’t look like a typical micro brewery from the outside and looks more like an office building, but when you make your way through the office in to the man cave and through to the brewery it was very much like a traditional micro brewery with tanks and brewing equipment. And inside was head brewer Adrian brewing up a storm so to speak.

When we pick a beer of the month we take a number of things in to consideration on behalf of our members. And since we featured the Holgate Extra Special Bitter in April we decided to go for something a bit darker (well a lot darker) and smokier for members to try. And since we couldn’t decide between the Black and the Dark Smoke we made the executive decision to send one group of members the 3 Ravens Black Stout, and another group the 3 Ravens Dark Smoke Beer. It was a win win decision for everyone and hope you feel the same.

Quote from the 3 Ravens website:

3 Ravens Black Stout
3 Ravens Black is a subtly complex stout. A bold yet hospitable beer, with roasted and chocolate malts to call you in from the cold, sweet Munich and caramel malts to warm you and oatmeal to wrap you in silky comfort. Traditional bottle conditioning naturally carbonates this beer and helps add to its complexity.

3 Ravens Dark Smoke Beer
3 Ravens Dark is a European smoked dark ale. A blend of unique German malts and classic Hallertau hop adds intrigue to an elegant, yet wlecoming beer. Modelled on an age old Franconian style ready to be rediscovered. Traditional bottle conditioning naturally carbonates this beer and helps add to its complexity.
Brewed and bottled in Australia.

So our aim when choosing the Beer Of The Month for members is to consider a variety of tastes and  introduce a range of new neer experiences. Oh and if you get a chance try complimenting the Black Stout with some slow cooked meat and the Dark Smoke Beer with a chocolate based dessert or piece of chocolate sitting on the couch (try Lindt Dark, perfect).

Cheers,
Robert (founder of the Beer Of The Month Club)

The Good Beer Week Festival

The Good Beer Week festival for 2014 has arrived in Melbourne once again and will take part between May 17 and May 25 this year.

Good Beer Week

Good Beer Week

The beer festival has grown in size every year from its early days and will feature a diverse line up of events and venues across Melbourne and Victoria in pubs, restaurants and more.

The Good Beer Week is a not for profit organization and started as a way to celebrate craft beer alongside the Australian International Beer Awards, the Craft Brewers Conference and the Great Australian Beer SpecTAPular, which all takes place during the Good Beer Week. It’s held in Melbourne and towns across Victoria and has inspired other beer weeks in New South Wales, Queensland, Canberra, Tasmania and Good Beer Wheaty over in Adelaide’s Wheatsheaf Hotel.

The Victorian and Australian craft beer industry has seen incredible growth over recent years and the Good Beer Week provides micro breweries and local venues with an opportunity to show what they’ve got to a broader audience across Australia and the world. Plus it will include breweries from the UK, America, Europe, Japan, Middle East and New Zealand.

The beer festival will provide the public with amazing degustation menus from of the best restaurants and venues across Victoria in conjunction with local, interstate and overseas craft beers.

The beer festical will run from May 17 to May 25 with the grand opening party being held at the new Forester’s Hall the day before on May 16.

Cheers and good luck to all of the micro breweries who have supported the Beer Of The Month Club and we’ll see you there!
