Have You Tried A Magic Coffee?

I go out for a coffee every morning to different cafes and usually order a latte (or café latte if ordering at Pellegrines Espresso Bar in Melbourne, who rightly say a latte is just a cup of milk and want the traditional way of ordering kept alive). But the problem I have is most of the time I’m disappointed with the colour and taste of nearly every milky latte I have. Note: This does not apply to Pellegrines Espresso Bar who make wonderful Italian style coffee and  pasta I absolutely love and recommend.

Magic Coffee aka Three Quarter Latte Next to a Standard Latte

Magic Coffee aka Three Quarter Latte Next to a Standard Latte

See the problem I have is the majority of coffee beans brewed are single origin or blends that are not particularly strong in order to cater for the majority of coffee drinkers. And before someone says, “Hang on, what do you expect from a latte made from 1 shot of coffee, 2 shots of milk and 1 shot of water?”, and I would say, “Well the coffee still has to be the dominant flavour in my opinion if its going to be considered a great coffee, don’t you think?”

“Okay, well why don’t you order a double shot instead?” said a friend of mine recently and I replied, ”Well a double shot is too strong for me. Plus I don’t want to get hooked on what would effectively  double the amount of coffee I have everyday.”

But things changed recently when I was talking to a Melbourne coffee roaster about next months coffee of the month for the Coffee Of The Month Club when I told him about my opinion of the average Melbourne latte and he said, “Well wait till you try one of mine!” And so I did and when he asked for my opinion I said, “It’s very good but I’d still prefer to have the coffee as the dominant flavour, where as I think this has milk as the dominant flavour”, and he said, “Okay have you tried a Magic coffee?” and I replied “no (with a smile on my face not knowing if he was getting offended like so many baristas would if I had said the same), and he said, ”It’s a three quarter latte with the same amount of coffee as a standard latte. Here, I’ll make you one”.

And so with this one conversation my daily coffee order changed to a Magic akathree quarter latte. Boom! Not too milky (like most lattes are for me), not too strong (like a double shot would be) and just the right amount of coffee dominating the flavour with milk and water as the support acts.

Do try :)
