Welcome to our first End Of Financial Year Wine Of The Year! Bought to you by Gift Of The Month Clubs.

In total there were 12 different Wine Of The Month Club selections over the previous 12 months; including famous and not so famous International and Australian wines and as you could probably imagine everyone had prepared well for the event, with strong opinions!

So after considerable debate the final votes were cast and narrowed down to the following 3 Wine Of The Month finalists:

EOFY Beer Of The Month

It’s the end of the financial year in Australia with winter under way so we went searching for a beer that would suit the climate so to speak.

The Beer Of The Month Club team met at one of our warehouse locations to start the process of selecting our next beer of the month! And to do this we usually start by discussing what everyone’s latest favourite beer is, for example Pale Ale, Lager, Pilsner and other craft beers.

Craft Beers

Craft Beers

So Max said, “Hey that’s been one of my favourite beers of late; but for winter why dont we find a nice dark beer instead?” Followed by a moment of silence until Matthew said, “Yeah but I’ll be in Europe and its going to be summer.” And so another moment of silence followed after Matthew had mentioned Europe again after including it in his last 100 sentences (but between us we’re secretly jealous, but don’t tell Matthew!) then Rob said, “Okay, I’ve been looking at some micro breweries and Buckley’s brewery sounds interesting. Why don’t we contact the head brewer and set up a good old fashioned beer tasting?” Heads nodded in agreement.

Buckleys Beer Healesville

Buckleys Beer Healesville

The Buckleys Micro Brewery started in 2001 and is one of the early pioneers of craft beer in Melbourne, Australia. But amazingly it’s not very well known outside of the inner craft beer scene which makes it another hard to find beer for our Beer Of The Month Club members. Not that we’re boasting or anything, well maybe a bit.

So where were we? Oh that’s right, Buckleys Brewery. Buckleys beer was named after the infamous convict William Buckley who had  escaped prison and set up camp with the Wathaurung Tribe in the Bellarine Peninsula of Port Phillip Bay between 1803 to 1835, which later started the Australian saying, “You’ve got Buckley’s chance”.  And so Buckleys Brewery  thought they would create their own saying that goes something like the following..

“Once you’ve tried the traditionally brewed Buckleys beer, non-filtered, full-flavoured ales and lagers you’ll come to the realisation it’s “Buckley’s, or none!”

So we had the enviable task of tasting Buckley’s range of craft beers, presented below by Buckleys Beer Manager Heath, and in keeping with our mission selected the Buckley’s Dark Boc for this months Beer Of The Month Club.

Movie Of The Month

Have you ever had a day when you thought, “what a lovely day” it is today? Well that’s what Nux from the blockbuster movie Mad Max Fury Road said in the middle of what most people would think was one of the worst days of their lives.

Mad Max Fury Road "What a lovely day"

Mad Max Fury Road “What a lovely day”

But to put things in to perspective, Nux as this Warboy character was called had previously said before this, ”I’m going to die historic on the Fury Road” while he was in the middle of getting a blood transplant to keep him alive in the disease ridden world they lived in. So I guess this explains a lot. But wait, there’s more..

Warboys were mechanics who dreamt of becoming road warriors and receiving the glory of dying in battle in order to go some sort of heaven as one of the Heros of All Time; not unlike the way Vikings believed in the glory of Valhalla. And when Nux later seens vehicles being swept up in to the clouds in the middle of a tornado he excitedly says, “What a lovely day” – and later in the film says, “I live, I die, I live again” while believing his destiny is to die a warriors death and become a hero. So you’re probably getting a good idea about Nux and the Mad Max movie if you didn’t know anything about it before. But don’t worry, this doesn’t spoil anything if you haven’t seen it and will only enhance your understanding of the movie.

So without giving away too much, it’s a pretty, well.. almost non stop action packed movie some will either love or be left a bit exhausted at the end of it. But the good news for Nux and the rest of the Mad Max Fury Road characters is if they don’t make it to a warrior heaven, they can at least say they made it to Hollywood.

Wine Of The Month

Winter has arrived in Australia and the weather has turned cold in Melbourne, Canberra and Hobart; with Brisbane, Perth and even Adelaide and Canberra still enjoying some warmer days. So we thought it was time to find a nice winter red wine to match the temperature around the country for this months Wine Of The Month Club.

2013 Cellar Exclusive Margaret River Cabernet Sauvignon

2013 Cellar Exclusive Margaret River Cabernet Sauvignon

We started looking at a number of wines and decided to narrow our search to a particular region. So Max said, “Why don’t we try the Margaret River in Western Australia? They’ve got around 150 wineries and make fantastic reds.”

The Margaret River has earned a well deserved reputation as one of the most famous wine growing regions in the world; built on what many believe are perfect conditions for premium wine making. For example there’s lots of Chardonnay award winners, Semillon Blancs, Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, blends and more to choose from.

So when Max talks we listen. And not just because he’s the oldest, or as some would suggest has drank the most but because he usually knows what one needs to know about wine. And so we narrowed our search to Margaret River red wines and blends famous for their dense and fruit flavours, multi layered complexities and cellaring quality and selected Capel Vale wines, one of Margaret Rivers oldest wine makers.

Capel Vale Western Australia

Capel Vale Western Australia

Capel Vale has earned its reputation as a pioneer in the Western Australian wine industry after being one of the first to plant vines in 1974. And in 1979 built their first wine making facility and produced their first vintage in 1980.

Capel Vale has remained a family owned and operated wine business and in 2007 Peter and Elizabeth Pratten passed the Chief Executive Office role to Simon Pratten. However both Peter and Elizabeth are reported to be still active in the business aka ”wine making lifestyle” from vineyard to bottle.

So what did we select for this months Wine Of The Month from Capel Vale wines?

Meet Celebrity Chefs At The Good Food & Wine Show

The Good Food and Wine Show kicks off in Melbourne this week and continues around Australia in Sydney, Brisbane and Perth.

Ainsley Harriott Celebrity Chef

Ainsley Harriott Celebrity Chef

Ainsley Harriott is being promoted this year as one of the feature celebrity chefs at the Melbourne arm of the Good Food & Wine Show.

Ainsley has gained his celebrity chef status over many years after being one of the first chefs to appear on television presenting exotic and rather unusual dishes for the day in the 1990′s before Jamie Oliver and Gordon Ramsay became famous.

Ainsley says he is excited about coming to Melbourne aka the food capital of Australia and said, “When you go to Melbourne restaurants it’s commonly known as a creative artistic city and that’s how the food is made and presented.”

Ainsley has appeared in a number of successful Australian television shows including Ready Steady Cook and says it was a lot more real than the heavily edited Master Chef and The Great Brittish Bake Off. He says food hasn’t really changed a lot as well, except for the way people are preparing and presenting it. “Kale has been around for a while and couscous has been around forever, but I like the fact that people are watching the cooking shows and challenging themselves to prepare something different”.

Other celebrities joining Ainsley with various cooking demonstrations at the Melbourne Good Food & Wine Show include Frank Camorra from Movida, Joe Grbac from Saint Crispin, Hayden McFarland from Woodland House, Miguel Maestre from The Living Room television show, Silvia Colloca and Adam Liaw from the SBS, author Sarah Wilson and previous My Kitchen Rules winners  Sammy and Bella Jakubiak.

“It’s a wonderful culinary journey and it’s not going away”, said Ainsley.
