About Christmas Colours

Red, green and gold are traditional Christmas colours across the Western and Northern parts of the world, but how did it start and what do they represent?

GREEN

Green represents evergreen plants such as Holly, Ivy and Mistletoe and have been used for literally thousands of years to decorate buildings during winter. They are also a reminder to people suffering through cold winters that spring is just around the corner! And today the colour green is commonly seen on Christmas trees in people homes across the world.

RED

One of the many visible colours of red at Christmas time were  apples on paradise trees – And apples falling represented the fall of Adam in famous plays.

The colour red is also the colour of Holly berries which represents the blood of Jesus when he crucified on the cross.

The colour red is also the colour used on many Bishops robes was famously worn by St Nicholas and hence the colour of Santa’s uniform.

Gold

Gold is the colour of the Sun and light joined together – with both red and gold being the colours of fire that people need for warmth at Christmas time. Gold was also one of the many gifts given to the baby Jesus by one of the wise men – With gold stars guiding the wise men to Jesus.

White

The colour white is associated with purity and peace in Western cultures. And is of course the colour of snow which is synonymous with Christmas.

“This isn’t the full history of Christmas colours but something we can all use to add a little colour Christmas conversations”, said Sam from Gift Of The Month Clubs.
