Monthly Beer Club

What is the best monthly beer club in Australia?

Monthly Beer Club

Monthly Beer Club

There are a few monthly beer clubs now in Australia. But when choosing a monthly beer club, its important to know that the Beer Of The Month Club was the original Beer Of The Month Club in Australia and through popularity grew in to other monthly clubs.

“We select craft beers from micro breweries around Australia and the world for our monthly beer club members,” said Rob from the Beer Of The Month Club.

Monthly beer clubs started overseas and in 2013 an Australian e commerce company bought the Beer Of The Month Club to Australia.

“It started with one monthly subscription club and quickly evolved in to other popular monthly clubs.”

Monthly beer club selections are sent to Melbourne members who subscribe, Sydney members, Brisbane members and other members around Australia.

Have You Tried a Boc Beer?

Boc beer is a rich, complex and malty style of lager.

“But dont think all Dark Boc beers are the same,” says Nathan aka manager at Buckleys Beer, “because there are many varieties which can be different in taste but never boring.”

Monasteries were known for brewing stronger beers for sustenance during their Lenten fasts which is the reason many Boc beer experts say Boc beer originated from this. However others say Boc beer is a Pagan or old world influence at a time when it was only brewed during the sign of the Capricorn goat (the reason why goat symbols are often associated with Boc beer) and was seen as a  symbol of hope and better times to come when nearing the end of winter.

In brewing terms a Boc beer generally takes months of lagering in cold storage to smooth out the strong ingredients. And is generally brewed with stronger ingredients than the majority of lagers with a distinctive dark amber to brown hue robust malt flavour. In addition Boc beer is only lightly hopped in the brewing process to avoid over balancing a hoppy bitterness with the desired malt flavour.

All in all we really enjoyed the Buckleys Dark Boc selected for the Beer Of The Month Club and look forward to trying more.

Has Christmas Started?

I’ve always been one to buy Christmas gifts when I see them at any time of the year, but traditionally Christmas shopping didn’t used to start until December. But then retailers started advertising Christmas in November and now in the middle of October we just got what we think is our first Christmas gift for the Beer Of The Month Club! And the reason we think this is because our customer selected January as the first month to start for their gift recipient to receive their first craft beer delivery.

My Trip To The Bellarine Estate Micro Brewery

Every month we select a new craft beer of the month and as head of research and craft beer discovery I headed on down to the Bellarine Brewing Company. B.t.w I just thought of that title; sounds like a good job title, dont you think?

Visitor Information Centre

Visitor Information Centre – Where’s Bellarine Estate?

Bellarine Estate sign

The Bellarine Estate micro brewery was established in 2007 and quote “produces exceptional quality lagers, ales, pilsners and stouts.” It’s located on the Bellarine Peninsula, a short trip from Geelong in Victoria,  and according to their website are the only brewery in the area brewing craft beer.

Bellarine Estate Brewing Tanks

Bellarine Estate quote, “The beers are distinctly different, full of character and flavour as only quality micro brewed beer can delivery. This is beer with attitude, perfect for the first time beer drinker and loved by the mature palate of a seasoned connoisseur.”

Bellarine Estate Craft Beer Selection

So with a description like this I couldn’t wait to try the Bellarine Estate craft beer tasting paddle showcasing their Lonsdale Lager, Pale Ale, Mussel Stout and Ginger Beer.

Bellarine Estate Beer Tasting Paddle

But when I first saw the tasting paddle I was a little concerned and  said to Katie (aka Bellarine Estate beer and wine tasting expert), “Wow, I’ve never seen a tasting paddle filled with pots!?” Katie laughed and said, “We actually make the tasting paddles here”, which added to the overall micro brewery experience, and gladly Katie didn’t  fill them to the top (because I was driving) and the beer tasting game begun.

Rob Holding The Bellarine Estate Beer Tasting Paddle

I started with the Bellarine Estate Lonsdale Lager,  followed by their Pale Ale, Mussel Stout, and finished with their alcoholic Ginger beer (a first for me) and experienced a range of craft beer I’d highly recommend.

So without further adieu, the July Beer of the month is the Bellarine Estate Lonsdale Lager! And will return for the Stout (perhaps in August while it’s still winter) and the Ginger beer in summer.

Micro brewery rating? It’s a great place to try some exciting craft beer, local wine and relax by the fire.

Cheers,
Robert from the Beer Of The Month Club

Beer Of The Month Club Goes to The Holgate Brewhouse

Well it’s that time of the month again folks where we search for the latest and greatest craft beer for members and gift recipients alike. So we started the search this month by first looking at previous beer of the month club selections and came to the conclusion it was about time we featured a beer of the bitter variety. But it had to be an award winner (a prestigious or multi award winner, either one, we’re not fussy) and after much deliberation decided to head up the Calder Freeway to the Holgate micro brewery in Woodend Victoria.

Woodend Sign on the Calder Freeway

Woodend Sign on the Calder Freeway

The Holgate Brewhouse was founded by Paul and Natasha Holgate after seeing the specialty craft beer industry thriving in the USA and Europe while travelling in the 1990′s. And as a direct result they decided to bring their love of craft beer to Australia and started brewing their own in 1999 in a small town called Woodend in Victoria. And after a few successful brews the Holgates decided to take over the old Keatings Hotel and called it the Holgate hotel where today you’ll find them brewing their own range of craft beers, serving it on tap and cooking up some wonderful gourmet food using the best local ingredients.

Holgate Brewhouse

Holgate Brewhouse

We arrived around lunchtime on a Sunday and found the Holgate staff busy pouring pots and taking food orders. And while we waited to speak with Colin (aka ”the manager”) I took the opportunity to take in the atmosphere and get to know the pub a little better where I saw families, couples and friends seated at the bar and inside tables enjoying a beer or two with matching gourmet food being ordered by what seemed like the majority of customers. And then it appeared (drum roll please); the famous Holgate Brewhouse tasting paddle with not 4 but 8 different craft beers on offer. But be warned if you’re driving folks because it’s equivalent to four standard drinks which meant I could safely taste about half of each but by no means left disappointed.

And after much deliberation (even though we knew what we wanted, but it’s safe to try before you buy and someone’s got to do it) we decided on the Holgate Extra Special Bitter for the April Beer of the month and will be back for more in the not too distant future. Watch this space.

Your new best friend. A long-standing favourite among beer enthusiasts and our most awared beer. A classic earthy English bitter you meet in the pub and invite home for a round of snooker and darts.

And that’s what we did (except without the snooker and darts unfortunately), but enjoyed the journey just the same. So thanks Colin (the Holgate Brewhouse manager) and team for your hospitality and would highly recommend the experience for all beer lovers.

Cheers,

Robert (founder and ceo of Gift Of The Month Clubs)
