“Our goal is to source and deliver the best craft beer available”, said Rob from the Beer Of The Month Club, “whether it’s a small hard to find micro brewery or an award winning beer, we’ll do our best to find it!”

The Two Birds Brewing Sunset Ale beat entrants from around the world including Australia, Netherlands, Britain, New Zealand and other craft beer brewing countries.

“It was the beer judges said they would have come back for another one and had the most distinctive flavour,” said Jayne Lewis. Jayne is one of two co founders from Australia’s first female owned micro brewery called Two Birds Brewing.

In addition the Two Birds Brewing Sunset Ale has won a number of awards at home in Australia in its short history of brewing craft beer. But is it the best craft beer in the world?

“Well it was the best beer at the festival”, said Jayne with a smile.

Craft Beer Makers Running Low on Water

A small micro brewery in California called the Fallbrook Brewing Co had just doubled their brewing capacity to meet increasing sales when they were hit with water restrictions. And if they exceed their limits while trying to survive the small brewing company could be hit with thousands of dollars in fines during the states ongoing record drought.

Craft Beer Tasting Paddle

There are more than 570 craft micro breweries in California alone using traditional beer making ingredients with another 250 expected to open in the not too distant future. And the state is doing  very well from the growth of craft beer sales having generated over 6.5 billion dollars to the economy over the last year producing a massive 3.5 million barrels of beer. But despite the water shortage they are the only state to introduce water restrictions across the drought stricken West.

Water is in high demand for craft breweries because it takes up to 7 litres of water to produce 1 litre of beer – which as a direct result of the drought is now forcing micro breweries to evolve by lowering their average water per litre of beer down to a lower 5 to 1 ratio. But despite this breweries are still under pressure to save more as the state aims to reduce water usage by 25%.

“Micro breweries have had little choice but to respond to the circumstances and are now digging water wells and tanks with many being forced to shelve expansion plans,” said Chuck from the Brewing Co. ”If rain doesn’t increase over winter there’s a fear that lots of micro breweries will be forced to close or leave the state.”

The states largest brewery Sierra Nevada has been told to drop its water use by 32 percent. ”We’ve already dropped water use by 25% and any further cuts would hurt sales.”

The Bear Republic Brewing Co has to date closed operations in 15 different markets after the Northern Californian town of Cloverdale said they didn’t have enough water to support their production. So instead of relocating the brewery they decided to invest a cool 4 million in facilities which as a result have reduced their water use by 25 percent.

“We have to protect our breweries future,” said Richard the brewery owner, “So if we cant produce the volume of beer we need then we have to look at other locations.”

Two Birds Brewing Craft Beer

It’s that time again when we had the difficult task of selecting a new beer of the month!

Two Birds Brewing

Two Birds Brewing

Pictured above is Danielle Allen and Jayne Lewis (co founders of Two Birds Brewing). Two Birds Brewing was founded in June 2011 after Jayne and Danielle got back from a trip overseas together where they visited some of the best micro breweries which inspired them to start their own craft beer in Australia.

They’re first beer was called the Golden Ale and was brewed in Geelong, Victoria, October 2011 at a shared brewing facility. And in May 2012 they launched their second craft beer called Sunset Ale.

Wind forward a couple of years to March 2014 and the Two Birds Brewery had been gaining enough popularity with venues around Australia to buy their very first company owned brewing tank. And a few months later in July the two birds brewing duo had opened their first tasting room.

Sunset Ale – Beer Of The Month
This Ale is brewed using a combination of malts including pale, wheat and crystal malts to provide drinkers with a round, rich and toffee flavours. Add US Citra with Australian Cascade hops to the mix to create a twist of grapefruit and tropical notes to balance the biscuit type malt base of flavors and you’re on a winner. Sunset Ale gives drinkers a round, rich and flavor full experience.

So what’s next for Two Birds Brewing? Well “Why stop at two?” say the girls and new beers have been created as they continue to disrupt the craft beer industry in Australia.

Craft Beer Brewery Mountain Goat Acquired by Asahi

Latest News: Asahi has acquired its second Australian craft beer brewery called Mountain Goat.

Mountain Goat Craft Beer

Mountain Goat Craft Beer

In 2013 the beer giant Asahi started it’s Australian craft beer expansion when it bought the Cricketers Arms craft brewery in Laverton, West of Melbourne and has clearly marked its intentions to compete in the growing Australian craft beer market.

Cam and David started Mountain Goat after brewing a few home brews in David’s backyard in the early 1990s.

The founders will be “sticking around” at Mountain Goat Brewery, and said they had formed a good relationship with the beer giant Asahi over the last few years.

“We’ve been contract partners with Asahi for a little over three years which has seen our beer sales grow exponentially in the boutique, craft beer market. And so we are confident Asahi will helps us sell more of our Mountain Goat craft beer to Australian beer drinkers than we could on our own.”.”

Unfortunately the full terms of the sale were not disclosed however we understand the brewery will continue to run as per normal.

“Mountain Goat has an unique reputation and strong sales record so we want to keep the Mountain Goat business running as per normal.”

The Mountain Goat Brewery employs over 25 full-time staff and another 20 or so casual staff. And usually brews its low volume beers at their Richmond micro brewery and brews its bigger batches of beer at their larger brewery in Laverton. Bottle sizes are 330ml and cans are typically 375 ml.
