Beer Of The Month Club. Watts River Brewing

Hi folks,

Long time between cheers! At least in blog terms.

We continued our never ending search for the best craft beer every month to deliver to our members and it was by chance my parents ran in to one of the Watts River Brewing family at a local bowls club.

So when Mum told me the story I wanted to know more about the two brewers who used to work at the famous White Rabbit brewery in Healesville, Victoria and thought.. these guys must know what they’re doing! I say this because the White Rabbit Dark Ale was one of the first craft beers I had the pleasure of tasting back in the day and was so impressed I started drinking more and more and..anyway back to Watts River Brewing.

Check out the Watts River Micro Brewery in the Yarra Valley on Google maps >

Watts River Brewing call Healesville their home in the Yarra Valley, Victoria - and use the Watts River right next to them as one of their main supplies of brewing water. In other words, it’s a great foundation for producing fresh locally produced Australian craft beer.

“Why did you leave White Rabbit?” I said to Ben (Watts River Brewing Co-founder), “We wanted to brew our own beer without the quality being watered down.” Okay, enough said. But I still love the White Rabbit Dark Ale.

This months Beer of the month selection is the Stout aka Dry Roasty Stout from Watts River Brewing.

Dry Roasty Stout

Dry Roasty Stout

Quote from the Watts River Brewing website.

“A dark, dry, roasty stout built on flavours of coffee and dark chocolate as well as a tiny hint of smoke drifting around in the background. Perfect to savour by yourself or share with an old mate.”

So instead of a roast, I propose a toast to the Watts River Brewing family and say cheers to a job well done. P.s we loved it :)

“Our goal is to source and deliver the best craft beer available”, said Rob from the Beer Of The Month Club, “whether it’s a small hard to find micro brewery or an award winning beer, we’ll do our best to find it!”

The Two Birds Brewing Sunset Ale beat entrants from around the world including Australia, Netherlands, Britain, New Zealand and other craft beer brewing countries.

“It was the beer judges said they would have come back for another one and had the most distinctive flavour,” said Jayne Lewis. Jayne is one of two co founders from Australia’s first female owned micro brewery called Two Birds Brewing.

In addition the Two Birds Brewing Sunset Ale has won a number of awards at home in Australia in its short history of brewing craft beer. But is it the best craft beer in the world?

“Well it was the best beer at the festival”, said Jayne with a smile.

Craft Beer Makers Running Low on Water

A small micro brewery in California called the Fallbrook Brewing Co had just doubled their brewing capacity to meet increasing sales when they were hit with water restrictions. And if they exceed their limits while trying to survive the small brewing company could be hit with thousands of dollars in fines during the states ongoing record drought.

Craft Beer Tasting Paddle

Craft Beer Tasting Paddle

There are more than 570 craft micro breweries in California alone using traditional beer making ingredients with another 250 expected to open in the not too distant future. And the state is doing  very well from the growth of craft beer sales having generated over 6.5 billion dollars to the economy over the last year producing a massive 3.5 million barrels of beer. But despite the water shortage they are the only state to introduce water restrictions across the drought stricken West.

Water is in high demand for craft breweries because it takes up to 7 litres of water to produce 1 litre of beer – which as a direct result of the drought is now forcing micro breweries to evolve by lowering their average water per litre of beer down to a lower 5 to 1 ratio. But despite this breweries are still under pressure to save more as the state aims to reduce water usage by 25%.

“Micro breweries have had little choice but to respond to the circumstances and are now digging water wells and tanks with many being forced to shelve expansion plans,” said Chuck from the Brewing Co. ”If rain doesn’t increase over winter there’s a fear that lots of micro breweries will be forced to close or leave the state.”

The states largest brewery Sierra Nevada has been told to drop its water use by 32 percent. ”We’ve already dropped water use by 25% and any further cuts would hurt sales.”

The Bear Republic Brewing Co has to date closed operations in 15 different markets after the Northern Californian town of Cloverdale said they didn’t have enough water to support their production. So instead of relocating the brewery they decided to invest a cool 4 million in facilities which as a result have reduced their water use by 25 percent.

“We have to protect our breweries future,” said Richard the brewery owner, “So if we cant produce the volume of beer we need then we have to look at other locations.”

Have You Tried a Boc Beer?

Boc beer is a rich, complex and malty style of lager.

“But dont think all Dark Boc beers are the same,” says Nathan aka manager at Buckleys Beer, “because there are many varieties which can be different in taste but never boring.”

Buckleys Dark Boc Beer
Buckleys Dark Boc Beer

Monasteries were known for brewing stronger beers for sustenance during their Lenten fasts which is the reason many Boc beer experts say Boc beer originated from this. However others say Boc beer is a Pagan or old world influence at a time when it was only brewed during the sign of the Capricorn goat (the reason why goat symbols are often associated with Boc beer) and was seen as a  symbol of hope and better times to come when nearing the end of winter.

In brewing terms a Boc beer generally takes months of lagering in cold storage to smooth out the strong ingredients. And is generally brewed with stronger ingredients than the majority of lagers with a distinctive dark amber to brown hue robust malt flavour. In addition Boc beer is only lightly hopped in the brewing process to avoid over balancing a hoppy bitterness with the desired malt flavour.

All in all we really enjoyed the Buckleys Dark Boc selected for the Beer Of The Month Club and look forward to trying more.

Cheers,
