Craft Beer, Burger and Chips Revolution

Craft Beer, Burger and Chips

There’s a craft beer, burger and chips revolution going on in Australia and for the sake of research I combined the three for the benefit of our readers. I’m good like that :)

Craft beer. Hawkers Beer was one of our recent micro brewery selections for the Beer Of The Month Club and so I grabbed a Hawkers Pilsner and headed down to Zenn Burgers in Melbourne, Australia.

Zenn Burgers

Zenn Burgers

I don’t remember the name of the burger I ordered but it was a big one and I’m pretty sure I could pick it out of a line up! This is because it had two big juicy beef burgers, lashes of bacon, relish and more and so it was probably called the Zenn Big Burger or something similar. So if you read this Zenn Burgers, please take a look at the below photo and let us know on Facebook what it’s called. Thanks!

It was a truly delicious burger and chips and combined with a Pilsner craft beer from Hawkers Beer it was a match made in heaven.

Cheers, Rob

Movie Of The Month

Have you ever had a day when you thought, “what a lovely day” it is today? Well that’s what Nux from the blockbuster movie Mad Max Fury Road said in the middle of what most people would think was one of the worst days of their lives.

Mad Max Fury Road "What a lovely day"

Mad Max Fury Road “What a lovely day”

But to put things in to perspective, Nux as this Warboy character was called had previously said before this, ”I’m going to die historic on the Fury Road” while he was in the middle of getting a blood transplant to keep him alive in the disease ridden world they lived in. So I guess this explains a lot. But wait, there’s more..

Warboys were mechanics who dreamt of becoming road warriors and receiving the glory of dying in battle in order to go some sort of heaven as one of the Heros of All Time; not unlike the way Vikings believed in the glory of Valhalla. And when Nux later seens vehicles being swept up in to the clouds in the middle of a tornado he excitedly says, “What a lovely day” – and later in the film says, “I live, I die, I live again” while believing his destiny is to die a warriors death and become a hero. So you’re probably getting a good idea about Nux and the Mad Max movie if you didn’t know anything about it before. But don’t worry, this doesn’t spoil anything if you haven’t seen it and will only enhance your understanding of the movie.

So without giving away too much, it’s a pretty, well.. almost non stop action packed movie some will either love or be left a bit exhausted at the end of it. But the good news for Nux and the rest of the Mad Max Fury Road characters is if they don’t make it to a warrior heaven, they can at least say they made it to Hollywood.

Have You Tried A Magic Coffee?

I go out for a coffee every morning to different cafes and usually order a latte (or café latte if ordering at Pellegrines Espresso Bar in Melbourne, who rightly say a latte is just a cup of milk and want the traditional way of ordering kept alive). But the problem I have is most of the time I’m disappointed with the colour and taste of nearly every milky latte I have. Note: This does not apply to Pellegrines Espresso Bar who make wonderful Italian style coffee and  pasta I absolutely love and recommend.

Magic Coffee aka Three Quarter Latte Next to a Standard Latte

Magic Coffee aka Three Quarter Latte Next to a Standard Latte

See the problem I have is the majority of coffee beans brewed are single origin or blends that are not particularly strong in order to cater for the majority of coffee drinkers. And before someone says, “Hang on, what do you expect from a latte made from 1 shot of coffee, 2 shots of milk and 1 shot of water?”, and I would say, “Well the coffee still has to be the dominant flavour in my opinion if its going to be considered a great coffee, don’t you think?”

“Okay, well why don’t you order a double shot instead?” said a friend of mine recently and I replied, ”Well a double shot is too strong for me. Plus I don’t want to get hooked on what would effectively  double the amount of coffee I have everyday.”

But things changed recently when I was talking to a Melbourne coffee roaster about next months coffee of the month for the Coffee Of The Month Club when I told him about my opinion of the average Melbourne latte and he said, “Well wait till you try one of mine!” And so I did and when he asked for my opinion I said, “It’s very good but I’d still prefer to have the coffee as the dominant flavour, where as I think this has milk as the dominant flavour”, and he said, “Okay have you tried a Magic coffee?” and I replied “no (with a smile on my face not knowing if he was getting offended like so many baristas would if I had said the same), and he said, ”It’s a three quarter latte with the same amount of coffee as a standard latte. Here, I’ll make you one”.

And so with this one conversation my daily coffee order changed to a Magic akathree quarter latte. Boom! Not too milky (like most lattes are for me), not too strong (like a double shot would be) and just the right amount of coffee dominating the flavour with milk and water as the support acts.

Do try :)

Craft Beer and Cider Sales Changing Australia’s Drinking Habits

Australian craft breweries aka micro breweries are slowly but surely changing Australia’s drinking habits with establishments across the country being forced to install a greater number of tap choices or face being left behind as more and more customers demand a range of craft beer and boutique ciders on top of the traditional beers like VB, Carlton United and XXXX say industry insiders.

Summer of Cider

Summer of Cider

“I went to a sports bar in Melbourne on Saturday to watch a live event and drank a few ciders instead of beer,” said Rob from Gift Of The Month Clubs. “It was pretty hot and thought why not try something different and loved it”.

Hoshizaki Lancer (equipment supplier) have reportedly installed over 1000 new dispensing systems in the previous 12 months to Christmas due to increased demand for a range of premium craft beers and ciders to replace older systems with limited taps.

“In the past 12 to 18 months we’ve been installing larger and larger dispensing systems to meet the demand of our customers. And while some taps are still devoted to the more commercial high volume brands we’ve noticed more and more are being put in for premium craft beers. Plus the cider market is growing and competing for tap space,” said Hoshizaki Lancer.

Christmas Retail Sales Were Up in Australia

Christmas retail sales in Australia were up 16 percent between December 1 and December 22 compared with the previous year, according to Inside retail.

Christmas shopping

Leading retailers say the increase in Christmas sales is in direct correlation with falling petrol prices, low interest rates and talk about interest rate drops.

“When petrol prices fall it’s like a pay raise”, said Sam from Gift Of The Month Clubs, “which means we’ve all got more money to spend on things like gifts at Christmas time.”

The lift in December Christmas sales however follows what some retailers were calling a slow November. But the National Australia Bank reports November sales were 3.9 percent higher than the previous year across Australia.

So all in all it was a pretty good Christmas period for Australian retail sales. And probably even better for online sales

Think outside the square

Here’s an amazing example of a farmer thinking outside the square after being denied a council permit to build a horse shelter. So what did the farmer do? He built a huge set of table and chairs instead. And you dont need a permit for that.
