Salute to International Wine Day!

Salute to International wine day!

Shiraz Mataro

Shiraz Mataro

Wine has been around for as many years as one can count and it’s that time of year again to raise your glass to International Wine Day. Salute!

Here’s some even better news. There are a number of health benefits to drinking a glass or two of wine. For example, moderate wine drinkers will lower their chance of liver disease, type two diabetes, heart attacks, strokes, and various forms of cancer. A wine or two has also been known to reduce bad cholesterol or LDL and increases good cholesterol  known as HDL.

Plus a glass of wine won’t add much to your waist line either with approximately 100 calories only, plus wine is fat and cholesterol free.

So what kind of wine should you choose to drink? Well if you are new to drinking wine, here are some tips to make you look like you know what you are talking about, including what to drink and eat to to increase your overall experience.

Note: There are many varieties of wine to choose from and here are eight of the main varieties.

Riesling

Riesling is a white grape from Germany. Bet you didn’t know that!? Pair a glass of riesling with turkey or hot food and dance the night away.

Pinot Gris

Pinot Gris is also another white wine you will enjoy. It comes from France and has a semi sweet taste which makes it very easy to drink for most people. Enjoy a Pinot Gris with a salad or mild cheese.

Sauvignon Blanc

Sauvignon Blanc is a very popular variety of white wine. It’s a white wine with a bit of honeydew and melon flavors mixed with a hint of mint, if you want to sound cool of course. Drink a Sauvignon Blanc wine with fish and white meat. For example, a sauvignon blanc goes great  with fish and chips!

Chardonnay

Chardonnay is a dry white variety as well. The lemon flavor compliments seafood varieties like crab and shrimp and soft cheeses like triple cream brie. And is one of Australia’s most popular wine varieties.

Pinot Noir

Now to the red wines, and let’s start with a little berry picking shall we. Pinot Noir, a light-to-medium red wine, often tastes like cherry and cranberry, but it can have a hint of black raspberry cola depending on the region. Enjoy a glass of Pinot Noir with veal, duck and cheese like gruyere cheese.

Zinfandel

Feeling fruity? Zinfandel is a wine full of exotic fruit flavors. This medium-red wine goes well with chicken, Thai food and cheddar cheese. Try it some day, you wont be disappointed.

Syrah

Syrah tastes of blueberry, plum, tobacco, black pepper and more and has been selected in the Wine Of The Month Club, but don’t let the complexity of the flavour scare you, Syrah is a red wine that plays well with lamb, beef, and white cheddar. A great winter wine or enjoy it any time of the year.

Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is a full-bodied red wine variety. It tastes of black cherry, baking spices, black currant and cedar. Pair this drink with some smoked meats and aged cheddar to properly enjoy. A great colder weather wine, but you can enjoy it at any time of the year.

Now that you know a few tips on pairing your wines, have a great  National Wine Day!

Want French Wine For Christmas Gifts?

The Wine Of The Month Club has found and selected a very special wine of the month for Christmas members, says Max from the Wine Of The Month Club (head wine selector).

“It’s Christmas and what better time of year is there than to celebrate with a boutique bottle of French wine”

Syrah wine

Syrah wine

Syrah wine description:
Who would like a taste of the South of France at Christmas? Of course! Well join us in a glass of Syrah (also known as Shiraz in France) by joining or giving someone a membership to the Wine Of The Month Club (select December for the Month to start for a pre Christmas gift delivery). Syrah wine is packed with bags of fruit, savoury spice and rustic tannins, and this French wine will have you drifting into France with each glass.

“It’s also got premium labelling on the bottle so it adds to the theatre of Christmas gift giving”

About Syrah wine: Syrah is also known as Shiraz and is a dark-skinned grape variety grown throughout the world - and is used mainly to produce red wine. And during the year 1800 the first Syrah grapes were taken from a city in Iran to France, the country of its origin.

Syrah grapes are also used as a varietal and blended with other grapes for wine making across the world and has been estimated (in 2004) to be the world’s 7th most grown grape - growing on over 142,600 hectares or 352,000 acres. Syrah can also be found around the world from France to more newer wine regions such as Chile, South Africa, the Hawke’s Bay in New Zealand, California, Washington and in a number of Australian wine regions including the Barossa, Coonawarra, Hunter Valley, Margaret River, McLaren Vale wine regions and more.

Salute and have a great Christmas everybody!

Wine Of The Month Club News for Fathers Day

Members of the Wine Of The Month Club will this month receive a bottle of Tempranillo Graciano Mataro from Ducks in a row Winemakers, Mclaren Vale, South Australia.

“It’s a Spanish inspired red wine made from three different grape varieties that all compliment one another.”

DUCKS IN a ROW WINEMAKERS

DUCKS IN a ROW Wine

“All of the grapes have been hand picked from a small batch fermented and basket pressed before being blended and matured in old hogsheads. The vibrancy of Graciano is integral to balance the low acidity of Tempranillo and the Mataro adds further depth, structure and savoury qualities. It’s a hedonistic glimpse of McLaren Vale.” Glenn James-Pritchard, winemaker.

James Halliday wine rating. 96 Points

Wine added to James Halliday 2014 Australian Wine Companion “Best of Other Reds and Blends”

“The colour is deep, the bouquet with strong black fruit aromas, and the seemingly inevitable touch of dark chocolate; a strong spice character runs through the palate, originally with red pepper, ageing into green pepper; outstanding tannin management is the key to an exceptionally good wine, one of the magic touches being a late decision to include the mataro in the blend, making it a complete wine.”

Salute!

Wine Of The Month Club Adds Value

The Wine Of The Month Club Australia has lowered prices and increased the average recommended retail price range per bottle of wine members receive.

McGuigan Wines

First change:
“We’ve finally been able to drop Australia Posts shipping charges from $9.95 per month to a low $6.95,” said Anne from Gift Of The Month Clubs.

Second change:
The Wine Of The Month Club frequently asked questions page previously stated the average recommended retail price range per bottle of wine members could expect to receive was between $15 and $25. But things have changed since the first wine club of its kind started in 2013.

We have been able to increase the average recommended retail price  (per bottle of wine members receive) from $15 to $25 to $25 to $35.said Anne.

So for a monthly membership cost of $29.95 per month plus postage and handling the Wine Of The Month Club offers gift givers, gift recipients and corporate gift members a terrific deal.

“We’re buying more wine than when we started so we can negotiate better deals with vineyards and suppliers and pass the value on to members”, said Max, Head Wine Selector - Wine Of The Month Club.

Salute!

Wine Of The Month

Winter has arrived in Australia and the weather has turned cold in Melbourne, Canberra and Hobart; with Brisbane, Perth and even Adelaide and Canberra still enjoying some warmer days. So we thought it was time to find a nice winter red wine to match the temperature around the country for this months Wine Of The Month Club.

2013 Cellar Exclusive Margaret River Cabernet Sauvignon

2013 Cellar Exclusive Margaret River Cabernet Sauvignon

We started looking at a number of wines and decided to narrow our search to a particular region. So Max said, “Why don’t we try the Margaret River in Western Australia? They’ve got around 150 wineries and make fantastic reds.”

The Margaret River has earned a well deserved reputation as one of the most famous wine growing regions in the world; built on what many believe are perfect conditions for premium wine making. For example there’s lots of Chardonnay award winners, Semillon Blancs, Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, blends and more to choose from.

So when Max talks we listen. And not just because he’s the oldest, or as some would suggest has drank the most but because he usually knows what one needs to know about wine. And so we narrowed our search to Margaret River red wines and blends famous for their dense and fruit flavours, multi layered complexities and cellaring quality and selected Capel Vale wines, one of Margaret Rivers oldest wine makers.

Capel Vale Western Australia

Capel Vale Western Australia

Capel Vale has earned its reputation as a pioneer in the Western Australian wine industry after being one of the first to plant vines in 1974. And in 1979 built their first wine making facility and produced their first vintage in 1980.

Capel Vale has remained a family owned and operated wine business and in 2007 Peter and Elizabeth Pratten passed the Chief Executive Office role to Simon Pratten. However both Peter and Elizabeth are reported to be still active in the business aka ”wine making lifestyle” from vineyard to bottle.

So what did we select for this months Wine Of The Month from Capel Vale wines?
Drum role..The Capel Vale 2013 Cellar Exclusive Margaret River Cabernet Sauvignon. RRP $32.95 on the Capel Vale website.

For more information about Capel Vale wine and this months Wine Of The Month selection go to the Capel Vale website.
